Jasper's Home Page

You are now visiting the Website of Jasper the Therapy Dog in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Jasper is seven and a half years old and is a full blooded male Shih Tzu who has been working as a Therapy Dog for six years. He started his career working with children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders and now works with persons in nursing homes and drop in centers. He weighs only 16 pounds so he is easy to have on your lap and is not intimidating to his clients. Jasper does not shed hair or dander so people with allergies are not allergic to Jasper. He also has a great smile and is soft and fluffy to the touch.

Jasper is certified by Therapy Dogs International and is the recipient of the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizenship Award.

His guardian is David Tamilin who is retired and holds a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Jasper's mission was to help those with Autism interact with each other in meaningful ways, overcome fears and to have happier lives. He was the focus of a research study in which children's interactions with each other were measured when he was a part of a play group of children verses when he was absent.

The results showed a significant difference between the two groups in a positive way.

His story was reported in the July 18, 2005 Erie Times News. (See Page: Newspaper Article)

Now Jasper and David have only one mission and that is to make people smile, laugh and interact in meaningful ways.

History

The use of canines to help mankind is known throughout the world. They have been used for guarding flocks, tracking, hunting, search and rescue, leading the blind, and in assisting the deaf and physically challenged. The bond between dog and man dates back to early history, but it wasn’t until recently that a correlation was acknowledged between this bond and the emotional health of humans. Studies have shown that a person holding or petting an animal will cause a lowering of blood pressure, the release of strain and tension, and can draw out a person from loneliness and depression.
